A new home with 4,210 sf (3,590 sf. living area) over an additional 2,200 sf fully excavated basement. Planned for a flat parcel in Menlo Park with mature trees, the design creates an elegant street presence without overwhelming the neighborhood of one-story bungalows with the occasional second story add-on. The new home replaces its worn-out predecessor while preserving an existing studio cottage and the healthy trees. Inspired by the Owners' living and entertaining preferences, the openness and transparency desired for entertaining are balanced with acoustically separated areas for study, work, and instrumental music. These apparently contradictory requirements are elegantly resolved with flexible spaces that can be opened-up or closed-off as needed.
